The Engine Guidance framework

What Is REG?

REG is a framework developed by Dean Jessop to explain two connected requirements: the correct entity must be recognized, and the correct information about it must be retrievable.

REG definition

REG means Recognition Engine Guidance and Retrieval Engine Guidance. It is a framework for helping search and AI systems identify the correct business or entity and retrieve accurate, relevant information about it.

REG begins before a generated answer is written. A system cannot represent a business accurately if it confuses the business with another company, fails to connect the business with its services or cannot retrieve the facts needed for the question.

The framework separates those two problems. Recognition asks, “Which entity is this?” Retrieval asks, “Which information about that entity is correct and useful now?”

Status of the term: REG is an original framework developed by Dean Jessop through IRefer Club. It is not a Google, OpenAI, Microsoft or schema.org standard, and it should not be described as one.

Recognition Engine Guidance

Recognition Engine Guidance focuses on identity. It helps create a consistent connection among the business name, category, services, locations, people, official website, social profiles, contact details and other verified public references.

A recognition problem occurs when a system cannot confidently determine whether several references describe the same business. Common causes include:

Recognition Engine Guidance does not attempt to manipulate a system into believing something false. Its purpose is to make the legitimate identity easier to establish and verify.

Retrieval Engine Guidance

Retrieval Engine Guidance focuses on whether the information needed for a question can be found and extracted.

A customer may ask whether a contractor serves a particular community, whether a restaurant has a specific option, whether a consultant works remotely or whether a service can be booked online. A company can be recognized correctly and still be omitted if the relevant answer is unavailable, buried or contradictory.

Retrieval Engine Guidance encourages businesses and publishers to:

The goal is not merely to publish more words. It is to make the correct facts available in the places where a search or retrieval system can reach them.

The Digital Handshake

The Digital Handshake is the public introduction that connects a business identity with what it does, where it serves, how it can be contacted and which links belong to it.

Before a customer calls, visits, books or buys, they may need to establish five basic facts:

  1. This is the correct business.
  2. The business provides the product or service needed.
  3. The business serves the relevant location or type of customer.
  4. The contact route is legitimate.
  5. The business appears credible enough to consider.

The Digital Handshake gives Recognition Engine Guidance and Retrieval Engine Guidance a practical customer-facing expression. Recognition establishes who the business is. Retrieval supplies the information needed to decide what to do next.

How REG differs from SEO, GEO, AEO and RAG

REG and SEO

SEO covers discovery, indexing, relevance and search visibility. REG concentrates on entity recognition and the retrievability of correct facts.

REG and GEO

GEO focuses on generated-answer visibility. REG focuses on whether the system has identified the right entity and can retrieve the right supporting information before or during that process.

REG and AEO

AEO makes a direct answer clear. REG asks whether the answer belongs to the correct entity and whether the necessary facts can be retrieved accurately.

REG and RAG

RAG is a technical architecture used by AI applications. REG is a publishing and entity-guidance framework used by organizations preparing information to be recognized and retrieved.

REG is not another name for RAG. The similarity of the acronyms makes the distinction especially important.

A practical REG process for a business

1. Establish identity

Choose the official business name, website, contact details, primary category and public profiles.

2. Resolve conflicts

Correct outdated or contradictory information where the business has control.

3. Define services

Explain the actual products, services, restrictions and customer types without vague marketing language.

4. Define place

State the physical location, service area, delivery area or online availability accurately.

5. Answer questions

Publish direct responses to the questions customers and search systems need answered.

6. Connect sources

Use crawlable links among the official website, profiles, booking pages and relevant supporting material.

After publication, the information must be maintained. A framework built on accuracy weakens when the business changes its services, links or contact information but leaves old facts online.

What REG is not

REG is useful when it produces clearer identity, fewer conflicts and more retrievable facts. It should be judged by the quality of that work, not by the acronym alone.

Origin of REG and the connection to IRefer

Dean Jessop developed REG through his work building IRefer Club, a small-business visibility service designed to help businesses be found through Google, Maps and AI search.

IRefer’s work requires both sides of the framework. The service must establish which business is being represented and connect that identity with services, areas served, contact information and official links. It must also present the facts in a way that customers and retrieval systems can locate and understand.

This website discloses that relationship openly. AI Search Explained is an educational publication by the same founder; it is not an independent third-party endorsement of IRefer.
