The complete comparison

SEO, GEO, AEO, AIO, REG and RAG Compared

The terms overlap, but they do not describe the same job. This page separates marketing disciplines, publishing strategies, entity guidance and technical AI architecture.

What each term is trying to improve

SEO: discovery

Can the page be crawled, indexed and surfaced for a relevant search?

GEO: generated visibility

Can the information be useful when a system composes a generated answer?

AEO: answer clarity

Can a specific question be answered immediately and accurately?

AIO: broad AI objective

What does the organization mean by optimizing for AI, or is it referring to Google AI Overviews?

REG: identity and facts

Has the correct entity been recognized, and can the correct facts be retrieved?

RAG: application grounding

Can an AI application retrieve external knowledge before it generates a response?

Marketing terms versus technical architecture

SEO, GEO and AEO are largely publishing, marketing and visibility disciplines. They describe actions taken by the creator or owner of information.

RAG is different. It is implemented inside an AI application or retrieval system. A website owner cannot install RAG into Google or ChatGPT. The owner can publish information that a retrieval system may later find.

REG sits between those worlds as an entity and information-guidance framework. It does not build the retrieval engine. It prepares identity and facts so that systems have a better opportunity to recognize and retrieve the right material.

Which one should a small business care about?

  1. Start with SEO: make the website, listings and essential information crawlable, accurate and useful.
  2. Apply REG: connect the correct business identity with services, service areas, people, contact details and official links.
  3. Use AEO: answer common customer questions directly.
  4. Use GEO: add original evidence, useful comparisons, clear sourcing and passages that can support a generated response.
  5. Define AIO: do not buy or sell “AIO” work without explaining what it means.
  6. Understand RAG: know that many AI products retrieve external information, but recognize that RAG is implemented by the application developer.

Common comparisons

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google explicitly says SEO remains relevant to its generative search features. GEO describes additional considerations around generated responses.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

No. AEO focuses on direct answers. GEO is broader and considers visibility or usefulness within generated responses.

Is REG the same as RAG?

No. REG is an entity and retrieval guidance framework. RAG is an AI architecture that retrieves external knowledge during generation.

Is AIO a settled term?

No. It can mean AI Optimization or AI Overviews. The writer should state which meaning is intended.
