SEO asks
Can the page be crawled, indexed and considered relevant enough to appear in search results?
GEO focuses on how content, organizations, products and people may be understood, selected or cited in generated answers.
GEO is concerned with generated responses rather than only a ranked list of web pages. A generated answer may combine information retrieved from several sources, summarize those sources and provide supporting links.
The term is now used broadly by marketers, publishers and software companies. There is no single universal GEO standard, certification or ranking formula. Different platforms use different retrieval systems, indexes, models and product rules.
A 2023 research paper titled GEO: Generative Engine Optimization described a framework for improving the visibility of content in responses from generative engines. The paper evaluated methods such as improving clarity, adding statistics, citing sources and strengthening persuasive or authoritative presentation.
That research helped give the term a formal academic reference. The industry meaning has since expanded. Today, GEO may include technical crawlability, answer-ready content, original research, entity clarity, source quality, citation readiness, multimedia and measurement of visibility within AI-generated responses.
Can the page be crawled, indexed and considered relevant enough to appear in search results?
Can a generative system understand, retrieve and use the page or entity when composing a direct answer?
The two overlap heavily. A page that is blocked from crawling, absent from an index or poorly connected internally has fewer opportunities to be retrieved. Strong SEO does not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer, but weak SEO can prevent the opportunity entirely.
These practices improve clarity and eligibility. They do not provide a guaranteed method for controlling a generated answer.
No publisher controls the complete process used by Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or another platform. A system may retrieve information through its own index, a search partner, a live fetch, a licensed source or a mixture of methods.
Generated responses can also vary by wording, time, location, account state and product version. A business may appear for one question and not another. A source may be used without being named in every response. A citation can change as the underlying index changes.
GEO should therefore be treated as disciplined publishing and technical preparation, not as a promise that a brand will always be mentioned.
A local pool company may want to be considered when someone asks, “Who installs steel pools near me?”
A crawlable page explains steel-pool installation, the service area, project process and contact information.
The page answers direct questions, shows original project examples, names materials and limitations, cites relevant standards and clearly identifies the company.
The system has more useful evidence to retrieve. Whether it selects that company still depends on the platform, query, location and competing information.
These references support the established definitions and technical explanations on this page.
